On cobbler's centime or with the e-bike
The small tour around the climatic health resort Birkendorf is not even 4 kilometres long. Whether on foot or by e-bike: You will experience the nature of your holiday region in the Rothauser Land live.
From Hotel Sonnhalde the circular trail leads through a colourful mixed forest in the direction of the Braun sawmill. Here, local wood is processed in an ultra-modern plant. Watch how the logs are transported on conveyors towards the sawmill.
The path continues to the Naturena bathing lake, which invites you to bathe in natural spring water in summer. The wide hiking trail leads you along the gorge to the former clothing factory. By the way, the gorge has its source above the lake in Grafenhausen and flows into the Wutach, which in turn flows into the Rhine. This creates a direct connection to the North Sea.

Hydropower is used to generate electricity at the gorge
At the house of the guest a cooling down at the water treading pool is worthwhile
In the gorge you can watch not only brown trout, but also the small water power that is used to produce electricity. The circular trail leads you via the road "Zum Schlüchttal" directly to the centre of Birkendorf. At the "Haus des Gastes" it is worth taking a short break at the water treading pool, which was built next to the primary school. After a round of refreshing pub crawling, the trail continues towards the Sonnenhof-Sonnhalde Hotel. Worthwhile on the rest of the way is also a view into the catholic parish church St. Margaretha. Besides Barbara and Katharina, St. Margaretha is one of the three women among the Fourteen Helpers in Need. These were popular saints in popular piety, who were called upon in times of need.

The special tip: Nature meets culture
Nature meets culture? Yes, this is possible in the "Rothauser Land" in the southern Black Forest. If you would like to combine hiking sports and culture during your stay at the Hotel Sonnenhof & Sonnhalde, here is a special tip: Black Forest life of the so-called "good old days" is shown in the Hüsli local history museum in Rothaus!
With its pulled down roof, the cosy parlours with painted ceilings, doors, wall cupboards and tiled stoves, the concert singer Helene Siegfried created with the 'Hüsli', as she called her house, an architectural total work of art. She collected clocks, porcelain and reverse glass paintings, paintings, glass and carvings - everything is shown in the original interior.
