The river has carved itself up to 170 metres deep into the landscape over around 33 kilometres. Anyone hiking here walks through a nature reserve that has been protected since 1939 and through rock strata representing a cross-section of around 300 million years of earth history.

From the Wellness Hotel Sonnenhof & Sonnhalde the main entry points to the gorge can be reached in 20 to 30 minutes by car. For years, we have been recommending specific tours to our guests, depending on their fitness level and the weather. This article summarises what to know before the first time Hiking the Wutach Gorge should know.

Length: around 33 km of main gorge

Depth: up to 170 m

Directions from the hotel: 20 to 30 minutes

Best season: May to October

Difficulty: easy to challenging, depending on the route

Content of this post

What makes the Wutach Gorge special

Hiking the Wutach Gorge: 5 routes compared

Practical tips for the tour

Best time of year

Other gorges in the Black Forest

FAQ

What makes the Wutach Gorge special

The name „Wutach“ derives from the Alemannic word for „angry“. This suits the course of the river, which can swell considerably after heavy rainfall. In the gorge section between Schattenmühle and Wutachmühle, there are no railings and no boardwalks in the classical sense, but rather a natural path with roots, scree and a few footbridges. Detailed route descriptions can also be found on the official tourism website.

Over 1,200 plant species and more than 500 animal species live in the protected area. Fire salamanders, kingfishers and various butterfly species can be observed more frequently. The paths are [interrupted] Southern Black Forest Nature Park managed. Compared to other gorges in the Black Forest, the Wutach Gorge is both the longest and the most natural.

Hiking the Wutach Gorge: 5 routes compared

The following tours cover the main preferences: short family rides, classic day tours and longer stages.

Schattenmühle to Wutachmühle (around 12 km)

The most famous route leads through the main part of the gorge. From the Schattenmühle car park, it takes about four hours downhill towards Wutachmühle, passing the Räuberschlössle ruins and several smaller waterfalls. The return journey to the car is handled by the line 7344 hiker's bus. Before the tour, it is worth checking the current timetable, as the bus operates seasonally.

Difficulty: medium. Elevation gain: around 200 m uphill, 400 m downhill. Sturdy footwear is essential.

Lotenbachklamm to Schattenmühle (approx. 4 km)

The Lotenbachklamm is a short tributary of the Wutach Gorge with several waterfalls. The route is suitable for families with children from about six years of age and for walkers with only half a day to spare. Afterwards, a break at the Schattenmühle inn is recommended.

Difficulty: easy to moderate. Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours. Surefootedness is required on the wooden walkways.

Wutach Flutes Loop (around 9 km)

The Wutachflühen are high rock faces in the upper section of the gorge. The circular tour starts at Achdorf station, leads via panoramic high-altitude trails and only descends to the valley floor on the back side. This section is usually quiet even during the summer holidays.

Difficulty: medium. Elevation gain: around 350 metres. Duration: around three hours.

Boll to Wutachmühle (around 18 km)

Anyone wanting to walk the whole gorge in a day starts in Boll. The tour combines the Lotenbachklamm, Räuberschlössle, Schurhammerhütte and the lower section of the gorge. The pure walking time is about five to six hours, plus breaks. An early start and a packed lunch are recommended.

Difficulty: challenging. Recommendation: Start before 9 am.

Two-day Wutach loop

A multi-day tour along the signposted Wutachrunden trails is particularly recommended in late spring. Day one leads as far as the Schattenmühle, day two back via the high trail. If you prefer comfort, you can stay in the same accommodation and have yourself driven to the starting point in the morning. We can organise this upon request from reception.

Practical tips for the tour

Footwear. Trainers and trekking sandals are not enough. Ankle-high walking boots with a profiled sole are the minimum, because many sections remain damp even in dry weather.

Road condition. The gorge is regularly affected by floods or rockfalls. Before every trip, it is advisable to check the website of the Southern Black Forest Nature Park or the signage at the entrance. We have up-to-date information at reception.

Catering. There are only a few places to stop for refreshments in the gorge: Schattenmühle, Wutachmühle and the Räuberschlössle (seasonal). Water, a packed lunch and sun protection belong in the rucksack. Upon order, we can pack a Black Forest hiking snack made from regional ingredients.

Mobile network. In the narrow valley bottom, mobile reception is patchy. It is best to save routes in advance as a GPX file or offline in a map app.

Dog. Dogs are permitted, but must be kept on a lead all year round to protect wildlife. A short lead is advisable in the narrow valley bottom.

Arrival without a car. Those arriving without a car are best off using the Wanderbus.

Best season for hiking in the Wutach Gorge

Anyone who wants to hike in the Wutach Gorge should keep the season in mind: every time of year has its own characteristics. In April and May, the waterfalls carry meltwater, and wild garlic blooms on the valley floor. On warm weekends in May, however, it can get busy, especially at the Lotenbachklamm. Anyone who can should set off before 9 am.

From June to August, the temperature on the valley floor is often five to ten degrees below that of the higher altitude. After thunderstorms, however, it can become slippery, and individual paths are then closed at short notice.

In September and October, the beech forest changes colour and the mushroom season begins. Foraging is only permitted outside the core zone. This time is particularly suitable for photography because of the clearer air.

From November to March, the gorge paths are not cleared and are considered closed. Walking them should be reserved for experienced hikers equipped with microspikes. During this time, the high-altitude trails around Bonndorf and Ühlingen are more scenic and safer.

Other gorges in the Black Forest

Anyone who has hiked in the Wutach Gorge once often wants to see more. Three other gorges in the Black Forest are easily accessible from the hotel.

The Gauchach Gorge flows into the Wutach and is similar in character, but is shorter and calmer. A half-day tour leads from the Burgmühle to Bachheim.

In the Höllental near Hinterzarten, the Ravennabach tumbles down two steps into the valley. The Ravenna Viaduct of the Höllentalbahn railway runs above the gorge and can also be seen up close by hikers. The tour is about seven kilometres long and can be reached in a driving time of around 50 minutes.

The Höllental itself, the narrow valley section between Hinterzarten and Buchenbach, is one of the narrowest gorges in the region. From the Hirschsprung viewpoint, you look almost vertically down onto the federal highway and the railway line. A half-day tour combines the Höllental with the Bismarckfelsen.

Travel and accommodation

Most entry points to the Wutach Gorge (Schattenmühle, Boll, Lotenbachklamm) are a 20 to 30-minute drive from the Sonnenhof & Sonnhalde. In practice, this means: breakfast at eight o'clock, setting off at around quarter past nine, so before the day-visitors from Freiburg or Basel arrive. Return to the hotel usually around 5 pm, followed by sauna and dinner.

Our Wellness area covers around 450 square metres with an indoor pool, Finnish sauna and textile sauna. Massages can be booked in advance.

Hiking the Wutach Gorge: Overnight stays in the region

Anyone wanting to stay in the region for more than a day has several options. An overnight hotel stay makes it possible to schedule a shorter hike on both the day of arrival and the day of departure, and to explore the entire Wutach Gorge on the day in between. Holiday apartments are available in the surrounding villages, though without a wellness area, which is especially welcome after a long hike.

We recommend at least three overnight stays if you want to hike in the Wutach Gorge while also visiting the other gorges in the region. One day for the Lotenbachklamm and Schattenmühle, one day for the big tour from Boll to Wutachmühle, one day for the Höllental or Ravenna Gorge. This leaves enough time between stages for relaxation at the hotel and for regional specialities in the evening.

Packages tailored specifically for hikers can be booked at Sonnenhof & Sonnhalde. In addition to overnight accommodation, these include packed lunches for the tour, a massage for recovery and advice at reception for daily planning. Anyone who wants to hike in the Wutach Gorge several times a year benefits from the regular guest discount for direct bookings.

Geology of the Wutach Gorge in brief

The Wutach Gorge is not only scenically, but also geologically interesting. Three major geological eras can be seen along the course of the gorge: Bunter sandstone, shell limestone and granite from the basement. Anyone who hikes attentively will recognise the transitions by the colour changes of the rock faces, the vegetation and the path surface.

A special feature is the so-called river course change: around 20,000 years ago, the Wutach still flowed towards the Danube. Due to erosion, it was diverted towards the Rhine, which caused the deep incision into the substrate that is visible today. Guided tours on the subject of geology can be booked via the Southern Black Forest Nature Park and are particularly recommended for families with inquisitive children.

Example daily schedule for the great Wutach tour

If you want to hike through the Wutach Gorge and are planning the classic route from Schattenmühle to Wutachmühle, you will benefit from well-thought-out daily planning. This is what a typical day looks like for us when hotel guests start this tour:

07:00: Breakfast at the Sonnenhof, regional and hearty

08:00: Collect packed lunch at reception, check condition of paths

08:15: Departure by car towards Bonndorf, Schattenmühle

09:00: Start of the walk at the Schattenmühle car park

11:30: Break at the Räuberschlössle, snack, photo stop

13:30: Arrival at Wutachmühle, break at the inn

14:30: Return journey with the hiker's bus line 7344

15:30: Back at the Schattenmühle car park, journey home

4:30 pm: Arrival at the hotel, sauna and pool

19:00: Dinner at the Sonnenhof restaurant

This itinerary leaves enough buffer for breaks, photo stops and unexpected detours. Anyone wanting to hike in the Wutach Gorge who prefers a more leisurely pace can extend lunch or put the start time back to 09:00. The only important thing is to be back at the starting point before dark.

The Wutach Gorge through the seasons

Walking in the Wutach Gorge means that every month offers a different experience. In March and early April, the gorge is often still closed or only partially accessible because meltwater and fallen branches affect the paths. From mid-April, the main paths generally open again.

In May the Wutach Gorge shows its greatest diversity: carpets of wild garlic, wood anemones, young beech leaves. The water level is high, waterfalls are particularly impressive. In June the weather stabilises, the days are long. July and August bring warm days, the gorge provides welcome coolness on the valley floor.

Experience shows that September is the finest month for photographers hiking in the Wutach Gorge. Clearer air, the beginning of autumn colours, and fewer crowds of hikers. In October, the beech forests are in full colour and the days are getting shorter. From November to March, the gorge is officially closed, and anyone entering does so at their own risk.

Walking with children in the Wutach Gorge

Families with children face the question of which route is suitable for their age group. Our recommendations from over ten years of hotel experience: up to the age of about five, a child carrier backpack is useful because many sections are not passable for pushchairs. From the age of six, the Lotenbachklamm works well, and from eight years, the main path from Schattenmühle to Wutachmühle in two stages with an overnight stay in between.

0–5 years: Short loop in the Lotenbachklamm, child carrier backpack

6–8 years: Lotenbachklamm to Schattenmühle, own pace

9–12 years: Schattenmühle to Wutachmühle in one stage

Aged 13 and over: Boll to Wutachmühle as a premier tour

What makes it exciting for children is that along the path, small bridges, wooden boardwalks and rock formations repeatedly invite you to take a break. Anyone who wants to hike in the Wutach Gorge with children in tow should best plan for a buffer of 30 to 60 minutes per hour of adult pace.

FAQ regarding the Wutach Gorge

Is the Wutachschlucht suitable for beginners?

The route from the Lotenbachklamm to the Schattenmühle is also manageable for inexperienced hikers, provided they have a head for heights and are sure-footed. Longer tours such as Boll to the Wutachmühle require hiking experience and good fitness.

Can you walk the Wutachschlucht with a pushchair?

No. The paths are narrow, full of roots and in places have steps. A child carrier is suitable for toddlers.

How much does the Wutach Gorge cost?

Admission is free. Parking at the trailheads usually costs three to five euros a day.

How long does the complete Wutach Gorge take?

The total distance from the source to the Rhine is over 90 kilometres long and is usually split into several stages. Experienced hikers can manage the section from Schattenmühle to Wutachmühle in four hours.

Are there guided tours?

Yes. The Wutachranger and certified Black Forest guides offer guided tours ranging from family walks to geological tours. We can arrange contact upon request.

Equipment for the Wutach Gorge

Anyone who wants to hike in the Wutach Gorge should adapt their equipment to the damp, often narrow valley floor. The following list has been compiled over the years from the experiences of our hotel guests.

Walking boots ankle-high, lugged sole, preferably water-resistant

Technical outerwear layering system, because it is 5–10 degrees cooler in the valley bottom

Rain protection In the Black Forest, rain is never far away, a poncho doesn't hurt

Rucksack 20–25 litres, waterproof or with rain cover

Water bottle at least one litre per person, more like more in summer

Headlamp for the longer Boll–Wutachmühle tour, in case time is tight

First-aid kit: blister plasters, wound compress, painkillers

Hiking the Wutach Gorge or Höllental: a comparison

Anyone considering which gorge in the Black Forest to walk in usually compares the Wutach Gorge and the Höllental. Both have their appeal, but they are very different. The Höllental is narrower, more dramatic in terms of its rock formations, and features the Hirschsprung as a striking viewpoint. The Wutach Gorge, on the other hand, is significantly longer, more diverse in its rock formations, and has comparatively less intrusion by civilisation from railways or roads.

For a first gorge experience with the family, the Lotenbachklamm in the Wutachschlucht is usually more suitable than the Höllental. Ambitious hikers looking for a day tour will find the route from Schattenmühle to Wutachmühle to be the most balanced option. Hiking in the Wutachschlucht means spending a whole day in a natural area without significantly encountering traffic or development.

Stop for refreshments and regional cuisine after the tour

Anyone who has been hiking in the Wutach Gorge will have worked up an appetite. Directly along the gorge trail there are three places to stop for food and drink: the Schattenmühle with homemade fare, the Wutachmühle with classic Black Forest cuisine, and the Räuberschlössle as a seasonal cabin. Anyone back at the hotel in the evening will find regional dishes in the Sonnenhof restaurant featuring ingredients from farms in the immediate vicinity.

Typical dishes after a Wutach Gorge hike: Black Forest ham on farmhouse bread, Maultaschen in broth, trout from the local trout farm at the nearby Tannenmühle, or a slice of Black Forest gateau. Anyone with more time can combine the tour with a visit to the Rothaus brewery in Grafenhausen, around 15 minutes from the hotel.

Safety when hiking in the Wutach Gorge

The Wutach Gorge is not an adventure trail with railings. Anyone hiking here walks on a narrow natural path with roots, scree and a few narrow bridges. Three tips that will make every Wutach Gorge hike safer:

Morning weather check: During heavy rain or thunderstorms, the Wutach can swell within a few hours, and individual bridges are then closed.

Plan for mobile signal blackspots: In the valley bottom you often can't reach anyone. Anyone hiking alone leaves a description of their route beforehand.

Plan the daily stage honestly: 18 kilometres in the gorge feel different from 18 kilometres on a flat high-altitude trail. Better to plan for a shorter distance and arrive relaxed.

Reservation at Sonnenhof & Sonnhalde

Anyone who wants to hike in the Wutach Gorge and then relax in peace has come to the right place.
