A day with the Triberg Waterfalls Black Forest, a visit to one of the oldest cuckoo clock manufacturers and a detour to the pom-pom hat village of Gutach — this day tour is one of the most eventful combinations that the central Black Forest has to offer. From the Sonnenhof & Sonnhalde wellness hotel, all three highlights lie along one route, with a total driving time of about 70 minutes to Triberg.

Station 1: Triberg Waterfalls

With a total drop of 163 metres, the Triberg Waterfalls are the highest waterfalls in Germany. The River Gutach plunges over seven main cascades into the valley. Walk from the main entrance takes about 45 minutes. Admission €7 for adults, €5 for children. Bonus: tame squirrels that eat peanuts out of your hand.

In spring, the Triberg Waterfalls carry melting snow, and in summer the spray provides a pleasant cooling effect. Three entrances make it easier to choose your route. Family-friendly for children aged 6 and over, or younger if carried in a child backpack carrier.

Station 2: Triberg Cuckoo Clock Manufacturers

Triberg is the world capital of the cuckoo clock. The largest cuckoo clock in the world is located in the House of 1,000 Clocks — 4.5 metres high, walk-in. Workshop tour: approx. 30 to 45 minutes. Souvenir clocks from 25 euros. Recommended: House of 1,000 Clocks, Eble Uhren-Park, German Clock Museum in Furtwangen (20 mins away).

Lunch break Triberg

Café Schäfer for the original Black Forest gateau (recipe from 1915), Gaststätte Pfaff for regional traditional fare, Hotel-Restaurant Adler for upscale Black Forest cuisine.

Station 3: Bollenhut + Vogtsbauernhof in Gutach

From Triberg in 15 mins to Gutach. The Bollenhut is traditionally worn in three municipalities: Gutach, Kirnbach, Reichenbach. Red pompoms = unmarried, black pompoms = married. At the Black Forest Open Air Museum Vogtsbauernhof in Gutach, six original farmsteads from 400 years of rural history have been reconstructed. On Sundays, staff sometimes wear the original traditional costume including the Bollenhut.

Admission to Vogtsbauernhof: €11 for adults, children up to 17 free. A 90-minute visit is enough for the day trip.
