The Marble Run Trail In Ühlingen-Birkendorf is one of the most popular adventure trails in the southern Black Forest. Over about a kilometre, wooden balls roll down the hill through fifteen stations — powered by wind, gravity and a little bit of mechanics. Families from the entire tri-border region come to this Upper Black Forest village because of this unusual trail. From the wellness hotel Sonnenhof & Sonnhalde, you can walk to the entrance in ten minutes.

This post shows what parents and children should know about the Kugelwaldpfad: what awaits you at the stations, how long the walk takes, what you should bring and why the path is the perfect opening hike on the day of arrival, especially from a hotel's perspective.

What is the Kugelwaldpfad?

The Kugelwaldpfad is an adventure trail where wooden balls roll down the slope along ingenious tracks. At each of the fifteen stations, something different happens: one ball triggers a sound track, another sets a mill in motion, a third travels through a vortex tower. The idea behind it: children experience physical principles — gravity, levers, inertia — through play with the wooden balls.

The ball forest trail was built by the municipality of Ühlingen-Birkendorf and opened in 2007. Since then it has been continuously expanded. The wooden balls are available for purchase or to borrow at the entrance for a small deposit — anyone who brings their own balls is also welcome.

The stations along the ball-track trail

The fifteen stations have different designs. Some need only a single ball, others several that are placed one after the other. Popular stations are:

At each station there is a small plaque with explanations for adults. Children often try things out directly without reading for long. Tip: Let several balls run at the same time — some stations work much more excitingly with multiple occupancy.

Directions to the Kugelwaldpfad in Birkendorf

The Kugelwaldpfad lies on the outskirts of Birkendorf, a district of the municipality Ühlingen-Birkendorf. The entrance area is at the „Naturena“ hiker's car park. From Wellness Hotel Sonnenhof & Sonnhalde From there, you walk down Schwarzwaldstraße and turn right at the Naturena sign. It is about a ten-minute walk in total. By car it takes two minutes — free parking is available at Naturena.

The path is open all year round, with entry via a simple wooden gate. In snow or heavy rain, the stations have limited functionality — if there is deep snow, the path is closed. In summer, the shaded route through the forest is pleasant.

Who is the Kugelwaldpfad suitable for?

The Kugelwaldpfad is a classic family trail. Three age groups benefit in particular:

Children aged 3 to 6 years

Pure fascination — balls roll, sound, and spin. For little ones, it's a magical forest. Important: parents must help to position the balls correctly. Duration for this age group: easily 2 hours, because a lot of experimenting goes on.

Children aged 7 to 12

The children already understand the mechanics and are experimenting independently. They combine multiple balls, test different speeds and discover peculiarities of the stations. Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours, often with a desire to repeat.

Adults and older children

Even without children, the path is well worth a walk through a beautiful mixed woodland. The wooden structures are skilfully impressive and show what can be achieved with simple means. Duration: 45 minutes to one hour.

Practical tips for the visit

Bring baubles: At the entrance there are wooden balls for a small deposit. Anyone who wants several balls at the same time brings their own (marbles and glass balls are not suitable — they do not fit into all tracks).

Footwear: Sturdy shoes, as the path is partly rooty and can be slippery after rain. Sneakers are enough, hiking boots are not necessary.

Vesper: There are no refreshment stops along the path. Anyone wanting to take a break packs sandwiches or fruit. There are benches at several points.

Pushchair Partially accessible — the main path is wide, but some stations are tucked away via short steps. A child carrier is the better option.

Dog Allowed on a lead. The path goes through a game reserve, so it is compulsory.

Combination tips for the marble run trail

The Kugelwaldpfad can be easily combined with other highlights in Ühlingen-Birkendorf:

Anyone in the Upper Black Forest region looking for family-friendly days out looks, will find here a compact half-day with minimal effort. The Kugelwaldpfad is particularly well suited as an introductory activity on arrival day, when the children are not yet tired and parents want to arrive in a relaxed frame of mind.

Best season for the Kugelwaldpfad

The ball forest trail works in every season, but some months are better than others. In spring (April–May) the forest is fresh and the balls roll without any problems. In summer (June–August) the shade provided by the mixed forest is a clear advantage — the trail is pleasantly cool even on hot days. In autumn (September–October) it is quiet and the beech trees turn colour. In winter the trail is partially restricted when there is snow — some stations no longer work with snow in the tracks.

From the hotel to the Kugelwaldpfad

What makes the Kugelwaldpfad so valuable from a hotel perspective: The proximity to Sonnenhof & Sonnhalde. You can set off right after breakfast without having to get into the car. Ten minutes on foot to the entrance, one to two hours on the trail, then back to the hotel for lunch or the sauna.

This exact combination makes the trail the ideal programme on the day of arrival, when the family arrives at 3 pm, checks into their rooms and wants to experience something before dinner. It also works well as a departure day idea: a quick loop before checking out at 11 am, then setting off at a leisurely pace.
