Wellness in the Black Forest in winter: The region shows its warmest side when snow falls outside and the sauna heats up inside. Wellness in the Black Forest is not just a summer topic. In winter, the region shows its warmest side — when snow falls outside, the sauna heats up inside and the Upper Black Forest becomes a quiet stage for relaxation.

The Upper Black Forest is one of the most snow-sure regions in Germany outside the Alps. Between mid-December and early April, higher altitudes often have 40 to 80 centimetres of snow — ideal for winter walks, snowshoe tours or cross-country skiing. What makes it special: anyone walking here has the perfect connection to a wellness day right on the doorstep. This article explains what wellness in the Black Forest in winter entails, which treatments are particularly suitable and why the cold season is considered by many regular guests to be the best wellness season of all.

What makes wellness in the Black Forest special in winter

Three points set the Black Forest winter apart from other wellness regions in Germany. Firstly, the mountain climate: at an altitude of around 800 metres (such as at the Sonnenhof & Sonnhalde wellness hotel in Ühlingen-Birkendorf), the air is virtually free of pollen and particulate matter, which relieves the respiratory tract and accelerates recovery. Secondly, the silence: in winter, the walking trails are significantly quieter than in summer, and the snow muffles all sounds. Thirdly, the contrast: alternating between frosty mountain air and a warm sauna is not just a feel-good experience — it measurably exercises the cardiovascular system.

While hiking holidays take centre stage in summer, the focus shifts in winter. Those travelling to the High Black Forest in January or February typically plan for two hours outside and six hours in the wellness area, the Black Forest lounge or by the indoor pool. Exactly this mix defines winter wellness in the Black Forest.

Sauna after a winter hike — a classic

There are few experiences that go together as well as two hours of winter hiking followed by 90 °C in a Finnish sauna. The effect: the body alternates between cold adaptation and heat relaxation — which is popularly known as „hardening“ and is researched as „hydrotherapy“. Studies from Finland show that regular sauna bathing reduces cardiovascular risk and the risk of respiratory infections.

In the wellness area of the Sonnenhof & Sonnhalde, both a classic Finnish sauna (90 °C, dry) and a textile sauna (60 °C, with infusions) are available. Alternating between the two, coupled with cooling down in the outdoor area and periods of rest in the relaxation area, is what sauna lovers enjoy in winter — we have integrated this concept into our Contribution to the sauna area described in detail. The Textile sauna is also suitable for guests who are (still) unfamiliar with the Finnish variant.

Which wellness treatments are suited to winter

Not every massage and treatment is equally good for every season. In winter, the following treatments come to the fore — particularly popular also with a Wellness weekend for female friends:

Honey massage. Warms the body, stimulates the metabolism and has a detoxifying effect. A classic winter treatment in many Black Forest hotels — the sweet scent suits the season.

Hot stone massage. Warmed basalt stones are placed on the body and massaged deep into the muscles. Particularly soothing after long hikes or days of skiing.

Aromatherapy massage with Black Forest herbs. Local herbs such as pine needle, juniper or dwarf pine are mixed with a carrier oil. Airways are cleared, and the scent calms the nervous system.

Beauty treatments for dry skin. In winter, indoor heating and cold outdoor air have a drying effect on the skin. A rich facial treatment with moisturising active ingredients is particularly in demand in winter.

Cupping or Lomi Lomi Nui. Those looking for a more intense method will also find traditional treatments such as cupping or the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Nui massage in the spa programmes of many Black Forest hotels.

Where to go winter walking — before heading to the sauna

The High Black Forest has a well-signposted network of winter walking trails that are cleared on a regular basis. The most important options around the Sonnenhof & Sonnhalde wellness hotel:

High-altitude trails around Ühlingen-Birkendorf. Directly from the hotel, several circular trails lead through mixed woodland and across meadows. Routes between 4 and 12 kilometres are possible, all of which are cleared in winter.

Feldberg summit pass. Around 40 minutes away by car is the largest ski area in the Black Forest. Those who do not ski will find numerous winter walking trails here — we experienced this in the Feldberg Hub post described in detail.

High-altitude trails around the Schluchsee. The area around the lake is quieter in winter than in summer and can be explored with good walking boots or snowshoes. More details in the post about Jägersteig at Schluchsee.

Wutachschlucht. Important: The Wutach Gorge itself is not officially cleared in winter and is only suitable for experienced winter hikers with microspikes. The high-altitude trails above (around Bonndorf and Ühlingen) are safe alternatives.

Cross-country ski trails. Anyone who likes cross-country skiing will find some of the finest trails in Germany in Menzenschwand, Bernau and at the Notschrei.

High Black Forest as a winter wellness region

Over recent decades, the Upper Black Forest has established itself as one of Germany's leading wellness regions. Several factors contribute to this: snow-sure high altitudes, numerous therapeutic health resorts with their own mineral springs (such as Menzenschwand and Hinterzarten), a well-established hotel industry with a clear focus on wellness, and proximity to the Swiss and French-speaking regions. Compared to typical ski regions in the Alps, the Black Forest scores points with a significantly more relaxed pace: no après-ski commotion, no overcrowded ski lifts, but rather dense forests where you can actually hike in solitude.

For guests who want to enjoy the wellness experience all year round, we have the Black Forest Wellness Hub Page structured — with cross-references to the sauna area, the day spa option and the regional range of applications.

Practical tips for winter wellness holidaymakers

Arrival. In winter, travelling with winter tyres or all-weather tyres is compulsory. The last few kilometres into the Hochschwarzwald high valley can become challenging when it snows — snow chains are only worthwhile on days with heavy snow. Regular buses run to Ühlingen-Birkendorf from Lauchringen or Eggingen-Süd railway stations.

Clothing. For the outdoor breaks, the layering system is the choice: a thin functional layer, middle insulation and windproof outer layer. For the wellness time, a bathrobe, flip-flops and swimwear are sufficient.

Book in advance. Massages and beauty treatments are often fully booked days in advance during the peak season between Christmas and the end of February. Anyone planning a specific treatment is best advised to enquire directly when booking the hotel.

Take altitude into account. Those who come from the flatlands may experience slight symptoms of acclimatisation on the first day — some fatigue, increased breathing. This typically passes after 24 hours. Drinking plenty of fluids and shorter walks on the day of arrival help.

Use guest card. The Konus guest card (valid across hotels) allows free use of buses and trains in the region. This makes it easy to get to the Feldberg ski area, the Notschrei cross-country skiing centre, or the historic old towns of Waldshut and St. Blasien.

Comparison: Spa break in summer vs winter

Anyone considering which season makes the most sense for a wellness break in the Black Forest should be aware of a few differences. In summer, longer hikes, swimming opportunities at the Schluchsee or Naturena bathing lake, and the use of outdoor pools predominate. Massages are shorter and usually geared towards recovery after sport. The wellness proportion of the daily routine is typically two to three hours.

In winter the ratio reverses. Shorter outdoor phases, longer wellness times, more intensive treatments, more reading and lounge time. Many regular guests explicitly book long wellness weekends in winter with a daily massage, multiple sauna sessions and beauty days. Prices are also often lower in the shoulder season (January/March) than in the summer peak season.

The run-up to Christmas has a very special atmosphere. Anyone who travels to the Black Forest during Advent can combine wellness with a visit to the famous Christmas markets — such as the Ravenna Christmas Market under the viaduct or the classic Black Forest Christmas market post.

Frequently asked questions about wellness in the Black Forest

When is the best time for a spa break in the Black Forest?

From a wellness perspective, a lot speaks in favour of the pre-season from January to March — quiet days, snow-covered landscape, more affordable prices. Those who prioritise outdoor activities are more likely to choose May/June or September/October. Those who like Christmas markets plan from late November to mid-December.

How much does a spa break in the Black Forest cost?

An overnight stay in a 3-star superior wellness hotel, including breakfast and free use of the wellness area, starts at around 120 to 180 euros per person per night in the Upper Black Forest. Individual massages cost between 60 and 120 euros, while a beauty day with several treatments ranges from 150 to 250 euros. Day spa passes without an overnight stay are available from around 35 euros per day.

Are there wellness hotels in the Black Forest with a bathrobe corridor to the outside?

Yes, many houses in the Upper Black Forest — including the Sonnenhof & Sonnhalde — offer direct access from the wellness area to an outdoor relaxation area, often with sun loungers and a sauna cabin. In winter, this is popular to use for a break in the frosty air after a sauna session.

Is wellness in the Black Forest also suitable for allergy sufferers?

The mountain climate from 800 metres is virtually pollen-free and provides relief for the respiratory tract. Therapeutic climatic health resorts such as Hinterzarten or Menzenschwand are explicitly promoted for allergy sufferers and asthmatics. In winter, moreover, the pollen count is significantly lower than in spring.

How do I combine wellness with a day trip?

A typical day: breakfast, an hour-and-a-half winter walk or short excursion (e.g. Trips in the Black Forest), lunch at the hotel, then in the afternoon sauna, massage and indoor pool. In the evening, Black Forest cuisine in the restaurant and reading time in the lounge.

Do I need my own towels for the sauna?

At Sonnenhof & Sonnhalde, we provide sauna and bath towels free of charge. Guests who would still prefer to bring their own towels are very welcome to do so — many of our regular guests appreciate the larger size.
